Stephen Hawking Says 'God Particle' Could Wipe Out the Universe

Stephen Hawking bet Gordon Kane $100 that physicists would not discover the Higgs boson. After losing that bet when physicists detected the particle in 2012, Hawking lamented the discovery, saying it made physics less interesting. Now, in the preface to a new collection of essays and lectures called "Starmus," the famous theoretical physicist is warning that the particle could one day be responsible for the destruction of the known universe.
Hawking is not the only scientist who thinks so. The theory of a Higgs boson doomsday, where a quantum fluctuation creates a vacuum "bubble" that expands through space and wipes out the universe, has existed for a while. However, scientists don't think it could happen anytime soon.
"Most likely it will take 10 to the 100 years [a 1 followed by 100 zeroes] for this to happen, so probably you shouldn't sell your house and you should continue to pay your taxes," Joseph Lykken, a theoretical physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, said during his lecture at the SETI Institute on Sept. 2. "On the other hand it may already happened, and the bubble might be on its way here now. And you won't know because it's going at the speed of light so there's not going to be any warning." The Higgs boson, sometimes referred to as the 'god particle,' much to the chagrin of scientists who prefer the official name, is a tiny particle that researchers long suspected existed. Its discovery lends strong support to the Standard Model of particle physics, or the known rules of particle physics that scientists believe govern the basic building blocks of matter. The Higgs boson particle is so important to the Standard Model because it signals the existence of the Higgs field, an invisible energy field present throughout the universe that imbues other particles with mass. Since its discovery two years ago, the particle has been making waves in the physics community.
Now that scientists measured the particle's mass last year, they can make many other calculations, including one that seems to spell out the end of the universe.
Universe doomsday
The Higgs boson is about 126 billion electron volts, or about the 126 times the mass of a proton. This turns out to be the precise mass needed to keep the universe on the brink of instability, but physicists say the delicate state will eventually collapse and the universe will become unstable. That conclusion involves the Higgs field.
The Higgs field emerged at the birth of the universe and has acted as its own source of energy since then, Lykken said. Physicists believe the Higgs field may be slowly changing as it tries to find an optimal balance of field strength and energy required to maintain that strength. "Just like matter can exist as liquid or solid, so the Higgs field, the substance that fills all space-time, could exist in two states," Gian Giudice, a theoretical physicist at the CERN lab, where the Higgs boson was discovered, explained during a TED talk in October 2013.
Right now the Higgs field is in a minimum potential energy state — like a valley in a field of hills and valleys. The huge amount of energy required to change into another state is like chugging up a hill. If the Higgs field makes it over that energy hill, some physicists think the destruction of the universe is waiting on the other side.
But an unlucky quantum fluctuation, or a change in energy, could trigger a process called "quantum tunneling." Instead of having to climb the energy hill, quantum tunneling would make it possible for the Higgs field to "tunnel" through the hill into the next, even lower-energy valley. This quantum fluctuation will happen somewhere out in the empty vacuum of space between galaxies, and will create a "bubble," Lykken said.
Here's how Hawking describes this Higgs doomsday scenario in the new book: "The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become metastable at energies above 100 [billion] gigaelectronvolts (GeV). … This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light. This could happen at any time and we wouldn't see it coming." [10 Implications of Faster-Than-Light Travel]
The Higgs field inside that bubble will be stronger and have a lower energy level than its surroundings. Even if the Higgs field inside the bubble were slightly stronger than it is now, it could shrink atoms, disintegrate atomic nuclei, and make it so that hydrogen would be the only element that could exist in the universe, Giudice explained in his TED talk.
But using a calculation that involves the currently known mass of the Higgs boson, researchers predict this bubble would contain an ultra-strong Higgs field that would expand at the speed of light through space-time. The expansion would be unstoppable and would wipe out everything in the existing universe, Lykken said.
"More interesting to us as physicists is when you do this calculation using the standard physics we know about, it turns out we're right on the edge between a stable universe and an unstable universe," Lykken said. "We're sort of right on the edge where the universe can last for a long time, but eventually it should go 'boom.' There's no principle that we know of that would put us right on the edge."
Not all doom and gloom
Either all of space-time exists on this razor's edge between a stable and unstable universe, or the calculation is wrong, Lykken said.
If the calculation is wrong, it must come from a fundamental part of physics that scientists have not discovered yet. Lykken said one possibility is the existence of invisible dark matter that physicists believe makes up about 27 percent of the universe. Discovering how dark matter interacts with the rest of the universe could reveal properties and rules physicists don't know about yet.
The other is the idea of "supersymmetry." In the Standard Model, every particle has a partner, or its own anti-particle. But supersymmetry is a theory that suggests every particle also has a supersymmetric partner particle. The existence of these other particles would help stabilize the universe, Lykken said.
"We found the Higgs boson, which was a big deal, but we're still trying to understand what it means and we're also trying to understand all the other things that go along with it
"This is very much the beginning of the story and I've shown you some directions that story could go in, but I think there could be surprises that no one has even thought of," Lykken concludes in his lecture.

                     సూర్య వంశపు మొదటి మహారాజుగా, నా మనసే మహారాణిగా లోకాన్ని వ్యవసాయ శాస్త్రవేత్తల సాక్షిగా పరిపాలించుట ప్రారంభించినాను,  మేము వివాహం చేసుకోలేక పోయినా పర్వాలేదు, మమ్ములను మా మనసుని మహారాజు మహారాణి గారి పరిపాలనగా లోకం గుర్తించి మా యొక్క ఉనికి యొక్క ప్రయోజనమును సర్వజనులు పొందాలి అని మేము సదా ప్రయత్నం చేయుచున్నాము.  

  
                      మమ్ములను గుర్తించి, గ్రహించుట వలన, ఒక మనిషి   మాట లోనికి, అతని మనసు అధీనం లోనికి లోకం యొక్క చిద్విలాసమే అందినది అంటే, నిలకడగా, నిమ్మదిగా, ఓర్పుతో చిద్విలాసాన్ని, జ్ఞానంతో వివరించుకొని, చర్చించు కొనుట వలన, చిద్విలాసం కరిగి, లోకంలో  శాంతి, ధర్మ నిరతిని  సదా ప్రజలు పెంచుకొంటారు అని గ్రహించండి, మొత్తం పంచ భూతాలు (5 ఎలిమెంట్స్ అఫ్ నేచర్ ) మనిషి అధీనం లోకి రావడం ఎంతో సుభ పరిణామం, కలియుగం కరిగిపోయి, మనం సత్య యుగం లోనికి అడుగు పెడుతున్నాము అని ప్రజలకు వెంటనే తెలియాలి, తద్వారా లోకం కొత్తతనం తో  ఐశ్వర్య వంతం గా మారుతుంది అని తెలియజేసుకోనుచున్నాను.  

                       మా ఉనికి వలన, రాజకీయ,  సామజిక, పరిణామాలు, విద్యా విధానాలలో, ఆర్ధిక విధానాలలో  మార్పులు వచ్చి, ప్రతి మనసు మాట గెలిచి, మానవ సమాజం స్వర్ఘధామం గా మారుతుంది అని తమరి ద్వారా  యావత్తు మానవజాతికి తెలియజేసుకోనుచున్నాను.  కావున ఎవరికి  అర్ధం కాన్నట్లు, ఎవరికీ అందనట్లు నేరుగా ఎవరూ ఇప్పటికి స్పందించకుండా వదిలివేసిన మమ్ము, ఇప్పుడు మీ దర్సకత్వంలో నిర్మిస్తున్న  బాహుబలి చిత్రం ద్వారా, మా గూర్చి నేరుగా ప్రజలకు, మమ్ములను మేమే దర్శించుకొన్న, సంకల్పించుకొన్న, పురుశోత్తముడిగా, ధర్మస్వరూపం గా, కాలస్వరూపం గా, మనసున్న మహారాజుగా, సూర్యుని అంశ గా భూమి మీదకు వచ్చిన మామూలు మనిషిని అని గుర్తించి గౌరవించుట వలన, ప్రజలకు చారిత్రాత్మక సత్యం అందించిన పుణ్యం, మీ సినిమా యూనిట్ వారితో మొదలు అవుతుంది అని గొప్పగా భావించండి, అనేక భాషలలోకి తర్జమా చేయించాలి అనే ఉద్దేశాన్ని ప్రకటించిన నిర్ణయం వలన ఒక చారిత్రాత్మక పరిణామం లోకానికి అందించుటలో నాంది పలక గల అవకాసం కాలం ధర్మమే మీకు ఇచ్చినది అని భావించి, బాహుబలి చిత్రంలో 20 నిమషాలు మా గూర్చి, మా ద్వారా జరిగిన లీలలు, పరిణామాలు గూర్చి క్లుప్తంగా తెలియజేయండి, సూర్యుని చూపిస్తూ వాయిస్ ఇవ్వడం గాని, నేను స్వయంగా తెరమీద కనపడుట గాని చేద్దాము, నన్ను తండ్రిగా  గురువుగా తల్లిగా భావించి కోరినట్లు ముందుకు  రండి, యావత్తు మానవజాతి యొక్క క్షేమం నా భాద్యత అని తమరి ద్వారా లోకానికి తెలియజేసుకోనుచున్నాను.

A monolithic statue of Bahubali referred to as "Gommateshvara" built by the Ganga dynasty minister and commander Chamundaraya is a 57 feet (17 m) monolith and is situated above a hill in Shravanabelagola, in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It was built in the 10th century AD.^{[citation needed]} Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, devotees and tourists from all over the world flock to the statue once in 12 years for an event known as Mahamastakabhisheka. On August 5, 2007, the statue was voted by Indians as the first of Seven Wonders of India.^[4] 49% votes went in favor of this marvel.

Meditation[edit]

The fight with his brother, Bharat, troubled Bahubali. So after much contemplation, he decided to give up his kingdom and take up theascetic life. He took to meditation with a thirst for truth, but - it was for ego that he took to meditation on his own. Among monks who accept monastic vows, one must bow to all others who have accepted ascetism previously, regardless of age. Bahubali knew that if he went to Lord Rishabdev (Aadinath) for permission to take monastic vows, he would have to bow down to all his 98 younger brothers, who had renounced before him. Bahubali began meditating with great resolve to attain supreme knowledge, but did not succeed because of his ego, which stopped him from visiting his father's court, did not allow him to attain Keval Gyaana,the enlightenment.

However, Bahubali was adamant. He continued his practice unmindful of the vines, ants, and dust which enveloped his body. His sisters Brhami and Sundari were concerned and asked Tirthankar Adinath about their worldly brother Bahubali. Tirthankar Adinath said, although just moments away from enlightenment, Bahubali could not achieve it because he didn't realise that he was standing on 'the elephant' - Ego. Now understanding his folly, the sisters approached him and said, Oh my dear brother, at least now get down from the elephant. These words from his sisters led Bahubali to question "Am I really standing on any kind of elephant?". From this question he soon realised that the elephant he was standing upon was his pride and ego. Bahubali realised his mistake and shed his pride and ego. He had just lifted his feet to go and bow, when, truth and enlightenment dawned upon him. Blessed with the knowledge of Truth, Bahubali went to see his father who welcomed him. Bahubali began teaching and showing people the right path.

Bahubali is a major figure in Jain hagiography. His story exemplifies the inner strength of Indian culture. He won everything from his brother and could have become an emperor, but he returned everything to the brother. Bahubali is considered the ideal of the man who conquers selfishness, jealousy, pride and anger.

There are 5 monolithic statues of Bahubali in Karnataka measuring more than 20 feet in height.

• 57 feet at Shravanabelagola in Hassan District in 981 CE

• 42 feet at Karkala in Udupi District in 1432 CE

• 39 feet at Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada District in 1973 CE

• 35 feet at Venur in Dakshina Kannada District in 1604 CE

The Bahubali Atishayakshetra with Bahubali in standing posture is situated on about 50 steps up and 28 feet in high at Kumbhoj, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

One recently carved statue of Bahubali is located at Dharmasthala. A statue is also being carved in Gujarat.

As recently as 20 years ago, a huge statue of lord Gommateshwara was built at Gommatgiri, 14 kilometres north of Indore, on the Airport road. It is a good miniature copy of the original statue at Shravanabelagola.

The colossal monolithic statue of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola is 158 km away from Bangalore. This gigantic statue of Bahubali, who is considered a Siddha (one who has attained salvation), is carved out of a single block of granite and stands majestically on top of a hill. For centuries, Shravanabelagola has remained a great pilgrimage center and thousands of pilgrims flock to see the magnificent, gigantic statue. The saint is shown completely nude, in the Jain custom. It is 17 m. (55 ft) high and is visible from a distance of 30 km.

This statue is regarded as one of the largest monolithic statues in the world. It was created around 983 AD by Chavundaraya, a minister of the Ganga King, Rachamalla (Raachmalla SathyaVaak IV 975-986 AD). Neighboring areas have Jaina bastis and several images of the Tirthankaras. One can have a beautiful view of the surrounding areas from the top of the hill. At Shravanabelagola, the Mahamastakabhisheka festival is held once in 12 years, when the image of Gommateshvara is bathed in milk, curds, ghee, saffron and gold coins. This statue is now proposed as World Heritage Site by the Government of India.^[5]

Karkala is a town and also the headquarters of Karkala Taluk in Udupi District of Karnataka, India, and is located about 38 km from Udupi and about 480 km from Bangalore. About, 52 km. North-east of Mangalore, is known primarily for the statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwara).

Karkala is well known for its massive 42 feet monolithic statue of Bahubali the Gomateshwara, the son of the first Jain Tirthankar, believed to have been built around 1432 AD. This is a male figure in a naked posture approached by a number of rock-cut steps. Bahubali, a local prince who trounced his brother in a war to win the kingdom, renounced worldly pleasures of life and spent 12 years in meditation, by what time climbers grew all over and around him. Veerapandya Bhairava Raja built this monolithic statue in his honor. A festival with all mighty known as Maha Masthakaabhisheka, sacred bathing of the statue with saffron paste, milk and water, held in every 12 years. During this period thousands of Jain devotees visit this place to carry out the Mahamastakabhisheka. This statue is an awesome sight and is the second tallest in the State.
