Message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe:
I delivered the first-ever address by a Japanese prime minister to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.
Japan and the U.S. share the fundamental values of freedom, democracy, basic human rights, and the rule of law.
I asserted that, on this basis, the Japan-U.S. alliance is an “alliance of hope” that takes on various challenges facing the world, and stated that Japan started out on the path of a peace-loving nation bearing in mind feelings of deep remorse over World War II.
I received applause and standing ovations several times during my address. I believe that I succeeded in making this a major springboard for fortifying Japan-U.S. relations still further.
