Centre releases Rs.255 crore for AP educational institutions
Giving a boost to educational institutions in the state, the University Grants Commission of the Government of India, today released Rs.255 crore for upgradation of universities and educational institutions in the state.
The funds released have been under four components, giving the highest share to Rajahmundry Government College which is an autonomous institution. The Government of India has sanctioned Rs55 crore to upgrade this college from an autonomous one to University.
Recognizing the historical and academic excellence of the 160-year old institution, the Centre has said that the college has potential for excellence. The Government College, Rajahmundry has also seen several greats of India. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan worked as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy while stalwart Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu worked as a faculty member in Telugu Department. Even Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu the first Chief Minister of the Andhra State are part of this college.
Meanwhile, the UGC has sanctioned Rs 20 crore each for Andhra University, Sri Venkateshwara University, Acharya Nagarjuna University and Sri Krishnadevaraya University for upgradation of infrastructure.
Further, the Government of India has also given Rs 12 crore each to upgrade Pathapatnam college in Srikakulam and Cheepurupalli college in Vizianagaram. The Center aims to make these colleges as model colleges.
Meanwhile, the UGC has also sanctioned grants worth Rs 96 crore (Rs2 crore each) for 48 colleges which have completed NAAC second cycle.
