"In order to create a positive future, given all the pain and destruction that have been inflicted in the past, we have to be willing to forgive. Yet we must learn from the past, or we will repeat our mistakes. After a thorn pricks our foot, we become alert with each step; this alertness could be what saves us from falling into a dangerous pit further on. It is from this perspective that we should view the painful experiences of the past. Those who have harmed others in the past should now engage in positive actions to uplift the victims of their past oppression. These principles apply to governments as well as to individuals. Each nation should foster an atmosphere of forgiveness, openness, friendship, trust, help and support to heal old wounds. In order to heal the wounds, broken relationships should be stitched with the thread of love. For this to be possible, more than intellectual knowledge, we should have an awareness of our oneness." -Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi)
