Message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe:
Today the Cabinet took a decision to approve bills related to legislation for peace and security.
“Never again repeat the tragedy of war.”
We will fully uphold this pledge not to engage in war into the future. These are indispensable bills for safeguarding the lives of the people as well as their peaceful daily lives and for making world peace more certain.
The security environment surrounding Japan is becoming increasingly severe. In order for us reliably to defend the peace and security of Japan, we must deepen our trust and our cooperative relations with our partners both within and beyond this region, notably Japan-U.S. cooperation. On that basis, it is necessary for us to prepare a domestic legal structure that is able to respond to any circumstances and prevent conflicts from occurring—in other words, we must enhance our deterrence.
Today, I held a press conference after the Cabinet Decision was reached, where I explained this decision. I will continue to provide thorough explanations to the public and work to gain their understanding even more going forward.
