While the history of the classical Indian dance form, Bharatnatyam spans over centuries, an alternative history of the evolution of this traditional temple dance can also be mapped through the contribution of Mrinalini Sarabhai, a pioneer amongst the contemporary Indian dancers. The film foregrounds Mrinalini as a powerful cultural figure who at one level challenges various social taboos and on the other hand pushes the boundaries of the form itself. Through various interpretations and adaptations undertaken by her dance academy, Darpana Dance Company, Mrinalini continues to reinvent the vocabulary of the dance form to foreground its power.
