NEW MOON---LUNAR ECLIPSE
In the case of New Moon or Amavasya, the Moon comes in between Sun and the Earth, and only the darker side of the Moon is visible from Earth. This happens normally once in every month. Amavasya is considered as bad by some people only.

In the case of lunar eclipse, Earth comes in between Sun and Moon and the shadow of Earth completely covers the Moon. (In the pic Umbra means shadow)
In both the cases we see a dark moon only. Why is lunar eclipse given so much of religious importance relatively when compared to New Moon? Astrologically, Rahu and Kethu are considered as Chaya Graha only. Astronomically, Rahu and Kehtu do not exist.
