-The Railway Budget for next year presented to Parliament today is a continuation of work in progress initiated last year with the objective of putting the system on track with focus on improvement of systems.
-It clearly outlined the efforts to ensure professional management of the vast system with focus on efficiency of operations, cost reduction, improved project management.
-Next years’ railway budget rightly placed emphasis on improving customer satisfaction ranging from the infant babies to senior citizens.
-Seeking to make Indian railways modern, a range of technology induction has been proposed which would go a long way in improving customer experience and systems improvement.
-The Budget rightly seeks to increase capital expenditure which was neglected over the years in recent past.
-What is particularly welcome is that the budget proposals are participatory seeking involvement of citizens, travelling public, NGOs, corporates and private sector and state governments for all round development of the system.
- For Southern States, the Railway Budget offered
• Partnership with State Governments of Telengana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu for developing suburban sections in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, respectively by deploying innovative financing mechanisms.

o Dedicated freight corridor between Kharagpur and Vijayawada
o Survey ordered for 9 projects which include Vijayawada-Guntur via Amaravathi with an approximate length of 67 kms; New Work to be undertaken include Guntakal-Guntur with approximate length of 443 kms.

- Other interesting provisions of Railway Budget include First Rail University at Vadodara, Railway flyovers in 17 states; 820 Road over-bridge and road under bridges; Antyodaya Express, Humsafar, Tejas and UDAY (Double Decker) Trains; LIC has agreed to invest Rs. 1.5 lakh crore over five years on extremely favourable terms; Broad Gauge lines at the rate of over 7 km per day; Sale of tickets through hand held terminals; Wi-Fi at 400 stations in next two years; Modern coaches to ensure higher carrying capacity and automatic doors, bar-code readers, bio-vacuum toilets, water-level indicators, accessible dustbins, ergonomic seating, improved aesthetics, vending machines, entertainment screens, LED lit boards etc
-In nutshell, the Railway Budget for 2016-17 is innovative and inspiring providing details of actions to be taken to make the system more efficient, reliable and modern while enhancing the customer satisfaction.
